Types of Citizenship
You can become a US citizen in two ways:
Citizenship Through Parents
If at least one of your parents is a US citizen at the time of your birth, you have citizenship. Additionally, if one of your parents becomes a citizen through naturalization before your 18th birthday, you may also gain citizenship.
Citizenship Through Naturalization
You may become a US citizen through naturalization.
To qualify for naturalization, you must:
- Be at least 18
- Demonstrate you are of good moral character
- Have possessed a green card for the proper period (typically three to five years)
- Pass an English and US civics test
