TPS for Haiti

|

On May 22, DHS announced a new 18-month designation of Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).  TPS will protect eligible Haitians from deportation and offer them the ability to apply for employment authorization. In addition to meeting other eligibility requirements, Haitian nationals residing in the U.S. as of May 21, 2021, will be able to apply. The decision by the U.S. government to designate Haiti for TPS was due to unsafe conditions in Haiti, including a political crisis, human rights abuses, and the COVID-19 pandemic’s exacerbation of a dire economic situation, and lack of access to food, water, and healthcare.
