Since it was first implemented in August of 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which offers reprieve from deportation and work authorization for certain undocumented young adults in the U.S., has positively impacted the lives of its recipients. Through DACA, hundreds of thousands of eligible youth have been able to obtain better employment opportunities, higher wages, and improved access to higher education. A recent report shows however that only about half of the total number of potentially eligible applicants in the U.S., have applied for DACA. The report is available here. The report finds that one of the major factors influencing potentially eligible applicants in their decision not to apply is the current political uncertainty surrounding DACA. Donald Trump has vocalized he will terminate the program, while Hillary Clinton vowed to preserve it. DACA’s future will largely be determined this November.
